What is the main way to mic up a drum kit?
Glyn John’s method is the main basic method to mic up a drum kit. This consists of 4 microphones.
2 condenser microphones, pg512 & pg56 these are both dynamic microphones.
Steps:
Snare drum mic has to be 4 fingers away from the skin in height and the centre of the drum.
Boom stand over centre of snare drum. Three drumsticks in height.
XLR to level both mics on stands from centre snare drum.
Kick drum
Left over head and right overhead.
Channels:
Kick drum mic has to be in channel 1
Snare drum in channel 2
Left overhead on channel 3
Right over head channel 4.
Turn phantom power on for condenser mic
Headphones and mic must not go above 12 0’clock.
To mic up a drum kit you will have to consider the different microphones that you can use. The recommended mic is a dynamic microphone. These are used for the bass, snare and sometimes the toms. Dynamic microphones are used because they are good at picking up the frequency.
